SCENE FOR THE DAY: Early Summer, 1951; Director: Yasujirô Ozu. The Cancer Moon Square Uranus theme made me think of Japanese director Ozu's body of work. His narrative theme is most often a traditional Japanese focus on home and family. His minimalist style, including a stationary camera and simple (often honoring emptiness) mise-en-scène (visual elements eg. composition) is a subject of screenwriter/director Paul Schrader's beautiful book, The Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer. Schrader refers to Zen art when describing Ozu's films. He quotes Alan Watts on the four moods of Zen: "When the moon of the moment is solitary and quiet it is called sabi. When the artist is feeling depressed or sad, and this particular emptiness of feeling catches a glimpse of something rather ordinary and unpretentious in its incredible "suchness," the mood is called wabi. When the moment evokes a more intense nostalgic sadness connected with autumn and the vanishing away of the world, it is called aware. And when the vision is hinting at an unknown never to be discovered, the mood is called yugen." There is a sadness in the breaking apart of a unity such as a family. In this clip we see two sisters consider the effects of one of them marrying a particular man. The family is concerned for her well-being. This is a very sweet moment between these two women and we actually experience a rare and optimistic lightness of soul in both dialogue and the open frame seaside location which, perhaps, expresses a kind of wabi.

Nine year old McKenna Grace plays Mary Adler who has lived with her uncle Frank (Chris Evans), since her mom died. He has home schooled her until now, but recognizing her Mercury/Uranus genius and believing she needs to get her mind off of differential equations and make some friends, sends her to public school. This is a surprisingly wonderful film with a perfect cast (Octavia Spencer, Lindsay Duncan and Jenny Slate) and it will totally win your heart. 

SUMMER SOLSTICE: JUNE 21, 2017

SUMMER SOLSTICE is exact at 0:24am EDT on Wednesday, June 21, when the Sun enters the Cardinal Water sign Cancer. Interestingly, the very next minute at 0:25 the Moon goes Void of Course for the rest of the day until 6:44pm when it enters Gemini. We made it by less than a minute to have the chart for Summer have an Excellent Taurus Moon! This reflects that a strong material grounding as well as Venus' archetype of Love, Beauty and Money is available to us for the season. (See the previous post for more on the Taurus Moon.)

The most dramatic feature of the Solstice chart is Saturn's residence at the top-of-the-chart Midheaven at 24 Sagittarius. This placement suggests a profound significance to this season. The nude scene was photographed pre-code but soon after was re-shot with Jane donning her jungle loin cloth attire. Only after Ted Turner purchased the MGM film library and re-edited the movie was it re-released in 1986 including the forbidden images. Totally Taurus Trine reconstructing Pluto! SCENE FOR THE DAY: Hidden Figures, 2016; Director: Theodore Melfi. A great film must have great characters. Every great character has a desire or goal that drives their action. Actress Janelle Monáe plays Mary Jackson. Mary's goal is to become an NASA engineer. To hold the audience's interest, tension around a character's goal is supplied - thus a barrier to Mary's desire is created. In this scene we see that her goal is thwarted because the school she needs to attend in order to become an engineer does not accept African-Americans into their program. To forward the drama, the character must make a decision to act - to overcome the barrier to reach her goal. Mary decides to go to court and provide a convincing argument to the judge to override this prohibitive policy. Her clever idea to make it happen? The importance of being first, to break new ground. Mary's courage and spirit to act drive her forward to achieve her goal. This entire film is grounded in strong women characters who possess these Aries' qualities that enable them to put Geminian new ideas into action. That's how NASA was able to put the first man on the Moon! 

JUNE 15-17: CHALLENGING PISCES MOON

JUNE 10-12: CHALLENGING CAPRICORN MOON

SCENE FOR THE DAY: Nixon, 1995; Director: Oliver Stone. A classic Capricorn, ambitious Richard Nixon climbed to the top of the political mountain and was shockingly brought down during the Watergate coverup scandal of 1972-4. In this clip we witness Stone's vision of Nixon's advisors addressing the call for his impeachment, a Uranian disruption to his presidency. Interestingly, at the time of his resignation, Uranus was making a t-square to his natal Sun in Capricorn opposite his Neptune in Cancer - which can signify a breaking up or a sudden bringing to light of a deceptive (Neptune) nature. Saturn reflects structure - that which brings things to form. Structures limit space. The restricting nature of Saturn's archetype often makes it difficult for this sign, especially for the Capricorn Moon, to feel love and a sense of belonging. (Nixon's Moon was in Aquarius, also ruled by Saturn traditionally - before the modern discovery of Uranus). JUNE 7-10: GOOD SAGITTARIUS FULL MOON

Its high-contrast (few greys) black and white images might reflect a paradox between stark either/or truths and the depth of meaning that mysteries and a bigger picture afford. JUNE 5-6: EXCELLENT SCORPIO MOON

It feels archetypal through and through: Human vs. Beast, Rational vs. Primitive, Integrity vs. Greed, Masculine vs. Feminine.
