NEW MOON ON HALLOWEEN EVE

Halloween on Monday, October 31 is also known as Samhain, a Gaelic/Scottish/Pagan festival marking the close of the Harvest season and beginning of the dark time of the year. It is one of the eight Pagan Sabbat's or solar festivals, celebrating earth's seasonal changes as the Sun's Wheel of Life turns. On this day we honor all those who have passed over, particularly our ancestors. The veil between the worlds of the living and the dead - and symbolically between light and darkness or consciousness and unconsciousness - is lifted and the invisible world becomes visible. This year's turning of the Sun  towards Winter is a doubly sensitive and powerful threshold because the NEW MOON occurs on the Eve of Halloween. The few days before the New Moon is referred to as the 'Dark Time of the Moon' in its monthly cycle. The New Moon sky will still appear moonless. Look up at the sky and, especially if it's a clear night, notice the lack of moonlight. You might see the suggestion of a crescent curve. It's been almost twenty years since the last New Moon on Halloween in 1997, so this is an uncommon event. So this Halloween both the Sun and Moon will carry the symbol of Darkness. And remember the cosmic law: As Above So Below. Notice your own cycles, your own patterns, your own waxing and waning. Of all the esoteric and magical systems astrology is the most revealing about the timing and meaning of our personal cycles. It can identify our rhythms of growth and testing. More specifically it identifies the most potent or most vulnerable times for action. It also reveals broader human patterns and cycles of the collective - singular countries and global unfolding.

The NEW MOON IS EXACT on the Eve of Halloween, October 30th at 7 degrees Scorpio. The Eve, the night before, of any event is considered its most potent period. In astrological terms it is the approach or waxing. The energy is moving towards climax and at its strongest. I often refer to the the SABIAN SYMBOL of a highlighted degree in order to amplify its meaning. Sabian Symbols are psychically channeled images associated with each degree of the zodiac. (See Dane Rudyar's book on Sabian Symbols - read 8 Scorpio). The image for this New Moon is "A CALM LAKE BATHED IN MOONLIGHT." Interestingly, this symbol incorporates both archetypes of light and darkness. Here is emphasized that in the darkest (Halloween-scariest) moments of the unknown or of unconsciousness (the lake) the light of consciousness shines through. Often we unknowingly project what's happening in our unconsciousness onto the outside world - other people - perhaps because its easier to observe. Our work is to identify these projections as reflected back to us by others and humbly take responsibility for them...just another profound way we get to witness our vital connection to others and the fine line between reality and illusion...think cinema!

All this suggests that this Halloween, what psychologist James Hillman calls seeing through is symbolically more available to us than usual. Take advantage of this moment in time. Be still for awhile and see through into your unconscious mind, into your dark side. What are you withholding, denying? What perspectives and values do you cling to from your past, from your ancestors? What do your instincts tell you? Do not be impulsive with your re-actions or rational in your thought - just stay with your 'automatic stream-of-consciousness' process as it leads you, image by image, deeper into this rich Scorpionic field of interior wisdom. Use meditation, automatic writing, authentic movement, your dreams or your sexuality to call up your guides.
